Description

In this lesson, students will practise reading intensively from a text on siblings and deducing meaning from context. Students will learn and practise vocabulary. They will also practise free speaking in the context of families.

Materials

Abc Handout of pictures from the internet

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, ss will have practised reading intensively and deducing meaning from context. They will also have learnt key vocabulary from the text .

Subsidiary Aims

  • The students will review vocabulary from the text. They will also practice free speaking in the context of families.

Procedure

Lead in (0-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show pictures of siblings and ask ss to guess the relationship between the people in the picture. Elicit the word siblings. Explain the meaning of the word - siblings. Feedback from the whole class Ask the question - Do you think its better to be the older or the younger brother or sister? why? Feed back from the whole class.

Pre teach vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • Pre teach vocabulary to prepare ss for the reading activity

Divide students in to three groups (groups of three or four depending on the number of ss present) Give Instructions on the activity and check for understanding. Provide pictures and words to each group and ask them to match the pictures with the words. Teacher to write the words on the board while the ss match the words with pictures. Feedback via nomination from each group. provide the answer key and ask them to recheck the answers. As each answer is discussed, ask questions from the picture to check understanding and stick the picture on the white board next to the word

Pre reading (2-3 minutes) • To activate schemata

Provide each group with a picture of Wendy and Carnie. Ask them to have a look at the picture and guess the answers to the questions in the handout. Let them discuss in pairs. Give instructions and check for understanding.

While reading (13-15 minutes) • Provide SS with more challenging and detailed deduction from the text through the reading exercise

Teacher will provide the students with the text on Wendy and Carnie. Ask them to read the text carefully. After reading the text ss will check if they have predicted the answers correctly. Teacher will ask ss to underline the sentence which led them to the answer. Feedback from each pair. Discuss with the rest of the class.

While Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with an understanding of words and phrases from the text so that they can relate it to the context.

Teacher to provide handouts to candidates and ask them to check match the word/phrase with the meaning. Students to work in groups of three or four). Once they have completed the answer sheet will be passed on to the next group. Answer key will be provided to each group and they will mark it. Check for understanding

Post reading (3-5 minutes) • To provide SS with an opportunity to speak freely and fluently with a personalised topic

Candidates to speak about their own experiences with siblings, how they felt as the older or younger member of the family. Teacher to demonstrate
