Main Aims

  • To introduce students to Past Simple tense in the context of a story which happened yesterday as well as provide them with accuracy speaking practice in a semi-controlled conversation in the context of what they did and where they were yesterday.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a writing practice in which students use the target language in the context of what somebody did last night.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (0-1 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Say 'Hello my friends. How are you today. Is everything all right?' To motivate them firstly I try to personalize my questions in which students are forced to answer in past form, But they can not and I could make some needs for them to use the past simple. So I say 'did you have a good week? did you do sth interesting?'. this way I can get them exposed to new language. Now I use teacher anecdote to lead them in the story and get them motivated. So I say 'I had an awful day yesterday. I'll tell you what happened, but before that I ask you some questions'

Exposure (6-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

show the questions on slides and ask them. After that go through the story and tell it along the slides are played

Highlighting (0-1 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Show on a slide or on the board the sentence 'I played volleyball with my cousins yesterday' and say 'the verb form is past simple'. elicit the form of it: 'how do we make it. can you tell me'

Clarification (9-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

After elicitation, I write form of the simple past on the board. elecit and ask 'do we always make simple past like this: v+ed ? for example "live"? we add only "d" not "ed" to some verbs in the end '. I clarify M.F.P of the language with drill. After that use extension and ask students to make more sentences in past simple, both in regular and irregular.

Controlled Practice (1-2 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

distribute the worksheets and Say 'Now, We have an activity, please fill in the blanks with appropriate verbs, do it alone, 2 minutes' I.C.Q: Say 'What are you going to do? How much time? you do it alone or 2 b2? Ok go ahead' Peer check: Say 'Ok thank you, Now 2 by 2 check your answers ' after that show them the right answers on a slide.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Say 'stand up, go around the class ask every one these 2 questions:1-where were you yesterday? 2-what did you do yesterday? to see which one is the most interesting to you? you've got 5 minutes' Demo: I ask somebody these 2 questions and he does too. I.C.Q:' What are you going to do now? How much time do you have?' W/C FB: ask 3 people what did they talk about in his/her group. 'who did the most interesting thing, what about your partner?'
