To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about stereotypes
To provide fluency in the context of stereotypes
Procedure (43-52 minutes)
I hang pictures on the WB,all of them are related to Italy.Then I ask them which is the first thing that comes up in their mind when they think about Italy.They discuss with their partner then they share their ideas with the whole class.
I try to elicit the concept of stereotype using the pieces of information they have about Italy.I make examples and ask them to provide examples of stereotypes of other countries.They work in pairs. Introduce the concepts of generalization ans exaggeration as they will find them in the text.
Students are given the article.They have to read it for gist and understand which are the main topics of the article.They can compare them with the ideas they shared at the beginning of the lesson.
Students are given a worksheet with a few questions about the article.In their group they discuss and answer the questions.Through the first four questions I check if they have understood the article.The last two ones can generate a group discussion,as their opinion is required.
Students have to think about their own country and which are the stereotypes of it.They work in small groups to share their ideas,then they share them with the rest of the class.
