Past Simple Lesson
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about the past simple tense through "Test,Teach,Test" in the context of "Technology". The lesson starts with a general talk about students' weekends. They then talk about their first ever techno-logic device in pairs. This is followed by a regular and irregular verbs practise. In the "Teach" stage, they learn about the form, pronunciation and the meaning of the TL. They practise what they've learned again and the lesson ends with a free speaking practise.

Main Aims

  • Grammar- Past simple positive regular and irregular verb forms

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Ask a strong student about what he/she did yesterday and also about his/her weekend. -Talk about the weekend I had and make sentences with Past Simple Tense eg. On Saturday, I woke up at 9am / I had breakfast / I cleaned the house / I went for shopping / I studied. / I met my friends for dinner etc.. - Ask some sts randomly about their weekend.

Test #1 (10-12 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

-Tell them the story of my first mobile phone using the past tense form My first mobile phone was a Motorola My father bought it for me in 1999. It was big and black. I liked it very much and used it for 2 years. - Ask them to imagine their first mobile phone/laptop or music player for one minute. - They should then speak to their partners about it for 3 minutes - Monitor them closely and note their mistakes without taking any part in the conversations (unless they need help) and review these mistakes possibly in the next stage. - Sts do ex. 1a, page 35 and check their answers with their partners.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

-Write the regular and irregular verbs on the right side of the WB from the ex 1a while they are busy doing the exercise. -Check their answers with the WC ( consider playing the track 1.45 if it won't delay the lesson). Practise saying the past forms with correct pronunciation. -Elicit the form of Past Simple eg. I use my mobile phone every day - Then say Yesterday...../ Write it on the board when sts give the correct form eg. I work for Sabanci / I listen to music/ I go to work etc. Break down the form on an example sentence. Draw a time line and explain further. -Check the meaning, form and pronunciation. Ask CCQ = I listened to music yesterday. 1) Am I listening to music right now? Did I listen yesterday? I loved my cat 1) Do I have a cat now? Is he alive? Is he dead? I went to the cinema yesterday. 1) Am I watching the movie now? Am I in the cinema? Make sure they all understood the meaning. Write their mistakes that was made earlier in the speaking activity on the WB and ask them to fix it.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

-Ask sts to find the regular and irregular verbs in the reading text in 2 minutes and check with WC -Give instructions to sts to do ex 2 on page 35 -They check in groups of 3 and check with the WC.

Free practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Sts make past simple sentences with the verbs on ex 1a in pairs Eg. Yesterday, I bought a dress / Yesterday I listened to music / I met my friend two days ago / I went to the cinema two weeks ago etc. -Alternatively or if there is more time, they will be divided into two groups. I will write a verb on the board and both groups will write a sentence in 10 seconds. The group who makes the correct sentence will get a point.
