Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of past simple tense, verb "to be" in the context of relationships.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide deduction listening practice using a text about meeting at a place in the context of relationships.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Tell ss that you want to inroduce them a friend of you Show the picture of Daisy (the character in the video) Tell that she has a problem Ask ss to guess her problem

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Do vocabulary pre-teaching Ask ss to watch the video and tell the problem Make the ss watch the video again and do the exercises in handout 1 individually Ask ss to check their answers Give an answer sheet for each student

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ask CCQs to check the ss understanding Highlight the grammar

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Draw a time line on the WB Tell a positive example sentence Elicit the meaning again Ask CCQs Drill the sentence Write the sentence on WB Do the same thing for the negative and question forms too

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will do a gap fill exercise Give the instructions Ask ss to do the task individually Give a time limit Write the answers on the WB

Free Practice (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Put the ss into groups of 3-4 Give each group a set of soap opera cards (pictures and words) Get each group spread the pictures and the words out on the table Tell them the pictures and the words tell a story There is one sentence for each picture Each sentence is made up of 3 words cards SS should sequence the pictures and match the sentences describing them The teacher checks the answers The group that does the sequencing correcly first is the winner The winner group reads out the story and the others check theirs
