Description

In this lesson students a CD recording of a psychologist's tips and advice to help people when they disagree with somebody about something. Students listen, for the first time for gist and specific information and second time for detail. At the end of the lesson they play a role-play to practice and expand what they have learnt through the listening. Aim of the lesson is to provide students practices to improve their integrated skills.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students on argument and discussion

Write on WB discussion and argument and ask students; what is the difference? When do we argue or when do we discuss or why? Elicit answers.

Pre-Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening and make it accessible

Tell students that they are going to listen a recording about a psychologist's tips and advice to help people when they disagree with somebody about something. Give the instructions to listen and tick the 6 things out of 10 she says. Exercise a. Ask ICQs; Are you going to answer the questions? no Are you going to tick the sentences? yes How many will you tick? only 6 Then give out the HO

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Play the recording (4 min) and let them do the task. Get the FB Answers are:1,3,5,6,7,9

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening task

Tell sts to listen one more time to add more detail to the tips you ticked with your partner and make sure they take small notes while listening. ICQs: What will you do? add more detail to the tick ones. Are you going to work alone? no, with a partner Play the recording again. Get the FB. Possible feedback is you have a disagreement with your roommate about the housework. The best way to start talking is "I think we'd better have another look about how we divide up the housework. Maybe there is a better way of doing this" Tell sts, within a group decide which 2 of the psychologist's tips you think are the most useful. Get the FB. Students are required to find the missing words in the Exercise b in pairs. Play the recording 4.15 (50 sec) and have sts check their answers. Get the FB. Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the recording and expand on what they've learned

By giving the opportunity to sts to practice what they have learnt through the recording, have them play a role-play. Wife and husband, mother and daughter explain that this is a role play sts first they'll write a dialogue and practice it in pairs. Monitor. Ask sts to get the FB; Did you follow any of the psychologist's advice about how to argue? Was there anything you should or shouldn' have done.
