Description

In this lesson, the students are going to be introduced to the future plans/arrangements use of the present continuous tense. They are going to practice using this tense for the future plans through controlled, less controlled, and freer practices. In addition, the students are going to be asked to interact/communicate with their classmates (in pairs) by using the present continuous tense within the context of future arrangements.

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the present continuous tense in the context of future arrangements.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a email in the context of personal plans for travel/holiday.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-1 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I am going to make students rememeber what they did in the previous lesson. I may also get a couple of sentences from them on what type of holidays they like, which places they prefer for their holidays, etc.

Exposure (2-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I am going to show the pictures of Esmay, Josh, and Ronnie whom they are going to listen to in the previous lesson. I am going to elicit a possible dialogue, one that is going to be very similar to the dialogue the students are going to hear in the previous lesson, between Esmay and Josh. This elicitation is going to be in a dialuogue buil-up format.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Based on the "built-up" dialogue, I am going to show the students a couple of sentences which will include the present continuous tense for future arrangements.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

1) Meaning: I am going to show a couple of the marker sentences to the students. I am going to give a HO to the students and wait for them to decide a) whether these sentence refer to the present or the future and b) whether they are a plan/arrengement or not? 2) Form: I am going to give the students a HO on which they are going to fill out a chart with simple words like he, she, we , they, am, is, are, etc. Based on that HO I am going to write the formula on the board trying to elicit the sentence structure from the students. 3) Pronunciation: I am going to show the students the marker sentences that I will have used to highliht the language focus. a) I am going to drill those sentences with the students (choral and individual drilling) to indicate that the verb BE is always weak in such sentences. b) I am going to indiccate that 'g' in the -ing ending is mostly not pronounced. (it transforms into nasal n).

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I am going to give the students a HO on which they are going to see a map indicating first day holiday plans of Esmay and Ronnie. By looking at the clues, the students are going to write who is doing what on their first day in sentences that are going to be in the present continuous tense.

Semi-Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

1) I am going to give the students a HO and they are going to be asked to make eight questions reordering the given words/phrases. 2) I am going to ask the students to practice, in pairs, mini dialouges based on the questions they will have made.

Free Practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I am going to ask the students to write an email to their father explaining why they are not going to visit them. In the email, the students are expected to write their main summer holiday plans/arrengements by using the present continuous tense. Then, I am planning to collect their papers in order to distribute them back to the students randomly, this time asking them to try to guess who the writer is.
