Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1) I elicit some examples of work and social invitations (Would you like to come to the cinema tomorrow evening? Can you join us for lunch today? ) 2) I elicit some convincing excuses involving previous arrangements (I’m sorry, I’m meeting my boss. I’d love to, but I’m playing basketball with my friends). 3) I say some new invitations and ask the students to try new excuses. (Would you like to have a picnic with us on Sunday? Could you meet me at my office tomorrow?) 4) Learners play this game with their partners 5)I show a picture a smiling man with thought bubbles over his head. In the bubbles, I write some notes about what he is going to do later ( walk into town, buy presents, eat at McDonalds, go to a birthday party at a night club and take a cab home). 6)I ask the students why he is smiling and tell them he is thinking about his afternoon and tonight and looking forward to it .I ask the learners if they can say what he is thinking and elicit the sentences( I am going to walk into town, I am going to buy presents, etc..) and get learners to practice them. 7)I ask the students to say what they are going to do tonight and guess what I am going to do.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

Students read the text and correct the malformed verbs. They then check their answers with their group

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Guided discovery: Learners get a handout with model sentences from the text. In groups,they then analyze the sentences and try to discover the rules .

Clarification (2-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

As feedback I will discuss the rules with them by asking them to explain why and how they have to such discoveries.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will do the exercise on the handout check their answers with their partners.

Semi-Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Learners will ask and answer the questions from the previous exercise with a partner.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will write their plans and arrangements for a coming holiday and then try to mingle to find someone who has the same plans like theirs.
