5.2 Listening lecture organisation 'signpost' language

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about diseases in the context of medical lectures

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of 'signpost' language in the context of medical lectures

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

5.2 A Project pictures from page 40. Ask Ss to guess the topic of the lecture they will listen to.

Pre-Listening (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

5.1 A continued. Ask students to discuss together what is in the pictures and predict what the lecture will be about. Ss make a list of points they think will be included in the lecture.

While-Listening #1 (4-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

5.2 B Ss Listen to Part 1 (2:07 min) (track 21) of the lecture. Listening to the introduction, they need to listen to the order in which the lecture is organised. Number the points 1-5.

Pre-Listening #2 (5-7 minutes) • To make an outline of the lecture

5.2 C 1. Ss write some key words for each topic 2. match the pictures (1-4) with the topics. 3. Discuss in pairs a good way to make notes on this lecture. 4. Ss make an outline of the lecture.

While-Listening #2 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

5.2 D Ss listen to Part 2 (2:53 min) (track 22) of the lecture. 1. Add information to their outlines (from 5.2 C) 2. Listen for the topics talked about in Part 1 of the lecture (5.2 B) and note the order they are discussed in. 3. What are malaria and smallpox examples of?

While-Listening #3 (7-10 minutes) • To provide detailed listening and hear a lecturer lose their place in a lecture.

5.2 E Ss listen to Part 3 (2:53 min) (track 23) of the lecture and make notes. 1. Which topics from Exercise 5.2 B are discussed? 2. Give two ways we can measure disease levels in a population. 3. What is the lecturer talking about when she loses her place?

Post-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

5.2 F Match the words and phrases used by the lecturer with synonyms (page 40). Check with your partner. Answers on PowerPoint.
