Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about My home town in the context of Places

Subsidiary Aims

  • To present and practice the lexical set of places in a town or city.


Warm Up / Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson and context and engage students

- T will write "towns and cities" on the board, and ask Ss to discuss in pairs about the difference between them. -T-s feedback (elicit a few answers) -T will teach the phrase "My home town", and tell them that we use this phrase to talk about the place where we live, even if we life in a city. - S-T give some names of towns and cities.

Pre - Reading 1 (4-6 minutes) • To prepare the Ss for the text and make it accessible.

-T will show picture of places, ask Ss to say the names and ask Ss to match picture with the name on the board. - T drill the words and SS will repeat chorally and individually. -T highlight the pronunciation of "building- museum- theatre" -T highlight that the stress on "shopping centre" and "bus station" is on the first word.

Pre - Reading 2 (4-6 minutes) • Pre- teach the vocabulary in ex2

- T drill the words in with the class. - Highlight the pronunciation, and SS repeat. - S do the exercise 2b in pairs and check, then check the answers with the class.

While- Reading task 1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist

Ss listen to the text, and answer "Does she like living in Bath? Ss in pairs discuss the answer T write the answer on board (Yes, she does.)

While- Reading task 2 (5-7 minutes) • reading for details

T hands out the passage. T set the SS read the (indiv), tick the true sentences. SS check in pairs WC correct the false sentences

Post - Reading (8-10 minutes)

T ask SS "Would you like to visit Bath?" Why? SS in pairs will ask and answer in pairs. SS in small groups, they will compare their opinions in WCF on task.
