Description

In this lesson students will learn about adjectives to describe qualities using appropriate stress. They will also discuss their opinions about an ideal partner and they will probably listen to six people expressing ideas about the same subject.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of personality adjectives in the context of relationships

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about ideal partners in the context of relationships

Procedure

Warm up (2-4 minutes) • To get students ready for the listening section.

I will start to have a little chat about how to choose a good partner. I will try to introduce some of the new words they are going to hear in the recording in some sentences about my friend's idea of an ideal partner. Did I forget to mention that I have the same idea as my friend!?

Listening (5-7 minutes) • To get students focused on the adjectives mentioned in the recording.

I will draw students attention to the personality adjectives they might hear in the recording but I will not provide them with the text unless we have finished talking about the recording and they are going to let me know which person is most like them. ICQs at the end.

Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To teach students new personality adjectives.

I will put students into 3 groups an provide each group with a dictionary. They will have some time to work with the dictionary and talk to each other trying to fill in the gaps in the table. They then will have some time to check their answers in their groups and they will be asked to fill in the gaps on the board using the projector.

Pre-Pronunciation (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the pronunciation exercises.

I will write three words on the board and ask about the number syllables in those words. I then play the recording for them to check their answers if needed. I might ask them to repeat the problematic ones.

Pronunciation (6-8 minutes) • To help students pronunce the adjectives in a proper way.

I will underline the stressed syllable in two of the adjectives and then put students into 2 different groups and ask each group to find a group of adjectives with the same stressed syllable and write them under their category on the board.

(4-6 minutes)

Depending on the time I either play snap using the personality adjectives or ask students to fill in the gaps in the handout related to the same subject and check their answers in pairs.

Production (7-9 minutes) • To let students use the personality adjectives in their speech.

I will put students into different groups and ask them to talk about their ideal partner.
