Listening Lesson
A2/B1 level

Description

In this lesson, students will develop their listening for gist and listening for specific information skills with the help of a context focused on free education. This is followed by a freer practice where students express their ideas about some sentences using the phrases for agreeing/disagreeing/asking for opinions.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about free education in the context of education.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of generalisations about people, money and English.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks the questions on ex 1. Wants them to work in pairs and discuss it. Then, while getting the ideas, T makes the meaning of the words clear with the help of the questions on ex.1. Writes the words on the board. After that, wants students to look at the picture and focus on the names. Before starting to listen, T gives the instruction for the while listening (gist)

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T makes sure that students understand the gist question before starting to listen. T wants Ss to work individually. Then, T plays the video once and wants students to check their answer with their partners. T gets the answers, gives feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

After listening for gist, T wants Ss to read the questions on ex. 3 before listening second time. T checks if Ss get the names of the people in the video correctly. T asks Ss to listen and decide if the sentences are true or false, on their own. T sets the time, replays the video. After that, wants Ss to check their answers with their friends, gets the answers and gives feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In this stage, T groups students by assigning them a group name.(As, Bs, Cs) After grouping them, T wants them to take a piece of paper and read it. On the papers these sentences are written: 'Money makes people happy. English is an easy language to learn. Everyone should only work four days a week. People shouldn't get married before they are 30.' T gives them three minutes and wants them to work in groups. T informs Ss that they can take notes. While they are speaking with their partners, T goes around the class and checks if there are any problems. Also, T writes the phrases on ex. 4 on the board. (asking for opinions/agreeing/disagreeing) After three minutes, T demonstrates the activity with one of the students and uses the necessary phrases. Then, asks for volunteers and nominates the Ss. At the end of it, T does error correction if there are any problems.
