Description

In this lesson, the students will practice speaking in shopping context. The lesson starts with a warming activity in which the students will guess the prices of objects. Then, they will practice forming sentences with "how much" and "this/these" through controlled practices. Finally, they will do a shopping role-play.

Procedure

Warmer / Lead in (5 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and engage students

T shows a picture of a Turkish department store and asks “What can I buy from ……?”.T shows pictures of objects and elicits their names from the students. T divides Ss into groups of four and gives each group handouts with pictures of the same objects and price tags on it. Ss work in groups and try to guess the prices of the objects. After each group completes the task, T gives the real prices of things.

Clarification of the grammar (10 minutes)

T uses the objects from the previous activity to elicit the questions “How much is …..? How much are ……?” Using the objects T elicits “this/these” and drills the pronunciation of them chorally and individually. T asks “What else do we ask in a shop or market?” and elicits the question “What size is this …..?”.

Controlled practice (7 minutes) • To practice forming sentences in the target language and to drill the pronunciation

T shows the pictures of the objects and drills the question (How much is this …./are these …?)with different objects. She repeats the practice with "What size is this .../ are these....?" question.

Controlled practice (7 minutes) • Practice of the functional language

T distributes HOs. Ss work in pairs and do the exercises. Pairs check each other’s answers and then they feedback to the class.

T gives each student HOs with object names on it. Ss work in pairs and ask and answer questions (How much is this……?/How much are these……?) using the objects.

Communicative activity (10 minutes) • To make the students use the functional language in a freer practice

T shows the picture of a market and elicits the word from the students. She asks CCQ’s such as “Is a market inside or outside?, What can you buy from a market?” T elicits the questions that they can ask while shopping in a market (Do you have …….? How much are these? What size is this? Do you have it in (size)/(color)?) T gives each student a role card (one of them is shop assistant and the other is the customer). Ss do the role play and then T gives different cards to each to swap roles.
