Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about letters to the editor in the context of jobs

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I link to previous lesson and remind the students of Bonnie and Harry.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

By using the text, I ask the students to identify which phrases are in the Present Continuous and which phrases are in the Present Simple.

Highlighting (5-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students do ex.3b for grammar discovery purposes.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I am going to use timelimes and concept checking questions to clarify meaning. I am going to focus on form on the board and drill sample sentences for pronunciation (especially contractions). I am going to introduce action and state verbs. Students do ex.3c.

Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students do ex.5 for controlled practice and work in pairs to compare answers. Whole class feedback to explain why each verb form is used.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students do ex.8. They write the questions -in pairs- using the prompts and peer check their answers. Students do ex.9. They mingle for that part and take notes. Whole class feedback by asking them what they found about their classmates.
