Description

In this lesson the students will practice reading for gist and reading for specific information within the context of a charity event. The students will also do speaking practices on the reading passage assigned.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about a person's exciting experience in the Amazon as apart of a charity event in the context of travel, adventure, charity

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a close pair discussions, group activities and nominating students in the context of exciting experience, The amazon, charity events

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • to activate the schemata regarding charity organisations

Show the icons and pictures of charity organizations to elicit the words "charity" and "raise money" then ask CCq about "charity" "raise money" and "take part in a charity event"

Pre-Reading Stage (7-10 minutes) • to check some of the key vocabulary necessary for comprehension

Elicit words " kayak, suffer from, humidtiy, exhaustion, boiling, give up, paddle" using CCQ and pictures. Play a kineasthetic game to revise the new vocabulary

Exposure 1 (7-10 minutes) • Reading for gist

Set the scene; show some pics of the Amazon and check how much they know Elicit the connection between Hellen Skelton and the Amazon. Do a prediction activity before Ss read the introduction as a group activity After prediction give 1 minutes to Ss to read only the introduction and assign a skimming question: "What is Hellen doing in the Amazon? and Why?" Then give 1 minutes to Ss to read only the introduction again to answer the Qs in 5b Ss then will find the answers at the corridor.

Exposure 2 (7-10 minutes) • Reading for specific information

Regroup the Ss as groups of "monday, tuesday wednesday and Thursday" assign a prediction question: "What kind of problems do you think Hellen has had on her journey? Ss say their predictions as a whole class activity. Give ss 3 minutes to read the whole text and check which of their predictions are true. Ss complete the gaps in the text choosing the words from 5d. First as pairs Ss compare their answers and then Teacher checks the answers as a whole class activity.

Wrap-up (5-7 minutes) • Freer speaking practice

Ss discuss as groups of 4 the question of "Have you ever had an exciting experience? Was it a positive one? How did you feel?"
