The mass debate
Upper Intermediate level

Description

Students are put into 2 teams and are given a subject that they will debate about. Points are given for good ideas as well as evidence given and accuracy of sentences.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a debate in the context of conjunctions (so, but, because, etc)

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate in the context of expressing ideas

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Give students one of the sentences from the worksheet. Write it on the board. Allow students to choose if they are Group A or B (the whole class should agree) The teacher will be the opposite group. Give students 5 minutes to think of opinions and find evidence (using the internet)

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Students and the teacher take turns debating for or against the sentence. Help students to structure good sentences and give extra points for well spoken sentences.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Put students into 2 groups. Rules: Every student should give at least one opinion (with evidence for extra points) Groups get points for, good opinions, solid evidence, accurate sentences. Minus points for Turkish or students not speaking or small sentences. Give groups a sentence from the worksheet and give 5 minutes to discuss ideas and find evidence. Debate. TAKE NOTES OF GOOD SENTENCES

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

After at least 2 sentences. Give students feedback on good sentences. Write on the board and discuss the grammar usage, phrasal verbs, etc.
