Description

In this lesson, ss will be engaged in receptive skill development by reading for the gist and specific information related to shopping in three different countries. The lesson starts with vocabulary revising. This is followed by a speaking activity about open places in İstanbul at night. After that there are two reading tasks focusing on listening for specific information. Finally there is a guided writing activity.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The T greets the sts and then gives the vocabulary exercise to revise they learned the previous day. These vocabulary items are necessary for speaking. The sts do the activity individually and check their answers with their partner. After that the T gives WC FB.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The T checks whether the sts know "morning, afternoon, evening and night". If the sts have problems with these words, the T draws a 24-hour timeline on the board to teach the vocabularies. After that she asks sts what is open and what is closed at 2 in the morning in İstanbul. The sts speak to their pair and then each pair share their ideas with another pair. after that the T asks each group to share their ideas with the class by telling one open and one close place at 2 am in İstanbul.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The T asks sts to read the text individually on p. 28 and find where they can go sopping in the evening / at night. After that she asks them to check their answers with their peers. Later she gives WC FB.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The T asks sts to read the text again and answer 6 questions on p 28 ex. 1b. After the sts finish answering, they check their answers with their peers. Later the T gives WC FB.

Post-Reading/Listening (15-17 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The T teaches what hometown is and asks sts to write a paragraph about their hometown with their partner. She guides the sts with 6 questions. After giving the instruction she shows a sample writing about her hometown. After the sts finish writing, she asks some volunteers to read their paragraph aloud.
