In this lesson, students will be able practice listening for gist and details.


Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about conincidences in the context of a lost book

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a freer speaking practice in the context of coincidences


Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I set the context of coincidences through illustrating a stick figure story of myself on the board. I elicit the word 'coincidence'.

Pre-Listening (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

On my ppt, I first show a poster from the movie 'The Silence of the Lambs'. I let them guess who the actor is and then show a couple of pictures of Anthony Hopkins. I have another slide with the picture of the lost book.

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

I ask them what the two coincidnces mentioned in the story. The students also do ex.1a and we check answers.

While-Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Students do ex.1b.

Post-Listening & Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students check their answers in pairs and then we have whole class feedback. Students do ex.8 using the bullet points given. They listen to each other in groups and I walk around to help when necessary. I ask them about the most interesting story for feedback.
