"The millionaire with a secret" (reading)

Description

In this lesson, Students will practice reading for gist, reading for finding the relationships between the ideas and reading for inference within the context of an article adapted from the Times magazine. Ss will also be able to learn new vocabulary and their pronunciation in the context of an article named "The millionaire with a secret". They will also practice their fluency in speaking with controlled speaking practices.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students by showing some photos

I show the photos and ask students some questions about the photos. The ss try to say as many words as possible related to the photos.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible, to teach some vocabulary that will help the ss understand the text better and easily

The teacher makes pairs, gives the instruction first and then the handout, sets a time limit (5 mins), The ss do the matching activity in pairs. The teacher monitors the pairs, First ss tell their answers and then the teacher shows the answer key on the ppt one by one. The teacher also shows the pronunciation and the word stress of the new vocabulary and drills them. The teacher asks two questions from the course book and the ss answers the questions in pairs.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The students unjumble the passages and put them in the correct order and then they read and answer some questions about the text in pairs. The teacher shows the answer key one by one.

While-Reading (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The students read the text again and and put the events in the correct order in pairs.The teacher shows the answer key one by one.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher asks a general question about the reading text, in pairs ss discuss about the question for 2 mins and then the teacher asks about their answers pair by pair. The ss do the last vocabulary activity for revision individually(4 mins) and compare their answers with their partners. The teacher shows the answer key one by one. The teacher drills the pronunciation of the words with the whole class.
