Main Aims

  • By the end of a group of lessons students will practice saying foods in English, listen to a chant about different foods and preferences, and practice talking about foods they have and don't have.

Subsidiary Aims

  • My Learning Aim: By the end of my 40 minute lesson, students will have practiced identifying foods in English and listen to specific information in a chant mentioning these foods in the context of likes and dislikes.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher draws happy face and sad face on the board and introduces "I like ...." and "I don't like ...." with various foods. Ask students for suggestions to gauge awareness of vocabulary. Bring students to front and teach/review foods with flashcards.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students listen to chant and recall which foods they heard. Students then practice the chant verse by verse as a whole class activity. Then line up students facing each other, lines take turns performing the chant. Finally students are put in pairs with a flashcard, and hold up their card when the food occurs in the chant.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students illustrate two plates, one happy and one sad to indicate what foods they like and dislike. They then circulate and show friends, explaining what they have drawn.

Review Lexis (2-5 minutes) • Students review vocabulary from the song with a guessing game

Teacher takes a card and asks students to guess which food is on the card. Students are put in two groups. Students ask ... "is it....?". The student who guesses is then invited to come and take a card.
