Description

In this lesson, Ss will be given some vocabulary connected with job applications. The lesson focus will be on vocabulary and pronunciation.

Main Aims

  • To present and practise the vocabulary about work

Subsidiary Aims

  • To use vocabulary presented in the lesson and increase fluency through speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context about work and engage Ss to the lesson

Give Ss the pictures and the sentences and ask them to match the pictures with the sentences. Check answers and model and drill the pronunciation. Also , point out and clarify the meaning of "apply for, cv-cirriculum vitae, work/do overtime, be/get sacked, be/get promoted" Optional Lead-in Put Ss in pairs and read the jobs quiz or write it on the board. Ss will answer in pairs and take fb. Make sure students can spell and pronounce the words correctly.

Exposure 1 (8-10 minutes) • to prepare Ss for the next stage and clarify the meaning

Get Ss to cover the sentences and look at the pictures. Get them to retell the story in pairs from memory, A testing B and then swapping. Then elicit the story from the class by asking individual Ss.

Exposure 2/Reading for vocabulary (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Put Ss in pairs and tell Ss to do the exercise 1 "describing your job". Check answers and drill the pronunciation where necessary.

Pronuncation and stress (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ask Ss how the phonetic show them where the stress falls (the syllable after the apostrophe (') is the one which is stressed. Get them to underline the stressed syllable in each word using the phonetics to help. Then play the cd and pause after each word to check the answers or ask Ss to tell you how each word is pronuonced just before you play it.

Controlled practice (3-4 minutes) • To get Ss to remember and practise the words they have learnt

Put Ss in pairs and ask them to test each other if they remember the words.Ss will tell them the explanation and they will the words.

Speaking (6-8 minutes) • To provide accuracy and practice in pronunciation and fluency in speaking

Put Ss in pairs. Focus on the questions and give Ss a few minutes to read them and think whether they have a family member or friend who fits any of the categories. They should try to think of someone for as many of the quetions as possible.Ss work in pairs telling each other about people they know. Encourage them to give, and ask for, as many details as they can.
