Description

In this lesson students will listen for gist and detail understanding in a context of Street Markets around the world. Ss will activate top-down processing in a discussion about Grand Bazaar Istanbul as well as in a brief vocabulary pre-teaching activity as a whole class. Ss will then listen for gist task and will predict the title of listening activity. Ss will make corrections in pairs and with transcript. The lesson will conclude with a writing task about learner's favorite shopping place.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about Street markets around the world

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a paragraph in the context of Street markets around the world.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher personalizes his stay in Istanbul and asks ss to advise him some good markets for shopping. Teacher breaks students into groups and assigns role to the students. Teacher gives them task to write the name about most famous market in Istanbul and things we can buy from that market. Ss work in pairs. Teacher monitors. FB whole class.

Pre-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher Informs ss that they will be listening to a text about Markets but before we listen let's take a look at some of the useful vocabulary. Teacher explains the task and checks icqs if necessary. Teacher distributes handouts containing on pictures and vocabulary. Students work in pairs and match the vocabulary with pictures. Teacher monitors closely and writes down learner's error. Teacher takes feedback Teacher reviews the vocabulary on white board with the help of ccqs to make sure students understanding. Teacher makes error correction of difficult lexis.

While-Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Teacher explains the task in which students will guess the title of listening text. Teacher gives instructions and checks icqs if necessary. Teacher instructs ss to work individually in the beginning of the activity and they will listen once. Teacher distributes the handouts. Teacher plays the audio. Ss listen and work with their peers. Teacher takes general feedback and asks ss to check the answer.

While Listening #2 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Teacher tells ss that they will be listening for detailed purpose this time. Teacher explains the task which is mark the correct answers Teacher gives instructions before giving handouts and changes the pair. Teacher distributes the handouts and gives some time to ss to understand the questions. Teacher plays the audio. Ss listen individually and then do the peer check. Teacher gives general feedback and provides answer keys.

While-listening 3 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening task

Teacher provides transcript of the listening text to the students. Teacher gives instructions and explains the task which is mark true and false. Teacher changes the pairs. Teacher distributes the handouts. Teacher plays the listening again and instructs students to take a look at transcription. Ss work in pairs and perform the task. Teacher monitors. Teacher provides answer keys. Teacher takes general feedback

Post-Listening (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Teacher instructs about their final activity which to' write a small paragraph about the market you like'. Teacher gives instructions. Teacher provides the handouts. Students work individually and write the paragraph. Teacher monitors the activity and assists where required. Teacher takes feedback.
