Main Aims

  • To provide sts further example of the context, "adventurers and explorers", through a listening task

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice to raise sts' knowledge about the context of "adventurers and explorers"

Procedure

Lead-In (3-5 minutes) • To engage students and set a context

*Ask ; "Do you remember Felix Baumgartner?" (-Austrian skydiver (jumped from space into the Earth) ---->Try to elicit the word ADVENTURER. CCQ= Is this a normal thing? NO. -Do we skydive every day? NO -Is he a normal person? NO -What we do we call him? AN ADVENTURER *Ask; -OK What about Christopher Columbus? ----->Try to elicit the word EXPLORER. -What did he do? Discovered America -What do we call him? AN EXPLORER *Ask the difference between adventurer & explorer (discuss in pairs); ----->adventurer = follows his/her interest, does exciting things (eg. Nasuh Mahruki - climber) ----->explorer = looks for sth new to discover, his/her purpose is to find new things (Piri Reis = discovered map of the world)

Discussion (3-5 minutes) • To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency

*After setting the context and making sts engaged in the topic; ---->Open a discussion topic = Consider that you have won an "adventure of a lifetime" prize. ---->Give three options = "going into space", "staying in a desert", or "living underwater" "Which one do you prefer?" *Discuss in pairs and then get feedback.

Prepositions of Movement (5-10 minutes) • To provide extra listening exercise and give clear information about "prepositions of movement"

*Before reading the short story which includes the prepositions; ---->make sure that sts know the meaning of 'circus' and 'tightrope walker'. circus = there are elephants, lions, clowns, people play with dogs, monkeys..etc tightrope walker = person who walks on a rope :) ---->If they don't understand show them a picture of the person. *While you are reading, they have to put the pictures of the prepositions in order. After that, check the answers. *Then, do the exercise in the book. When sts finish, they can check their answers with their partners. I will give them the answer key.

Making a description about a journey (2-5 minutes) • To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency

*After learning the prepositions; --->sts can describe their journey from their house to ITI by using those prepositions (not all of them). --->They can discuss this in pairs.

Listening (15-20 minutes) • To give Ss practice in listening for gist and specific information

*Pre = Show the picture of American adventurer Steve Fosset and ask WHY DO YOU THINK HE IS AN ADVENTURER? --->Write the ideas on the w/b. --->Maybe he has broken a record, right? = to set a new record for sth. *While = sts will listen and check their guesses ---->In the first listening, sts will just focus on the sports he has done. ---->In the second one, I will give HO of some sentences with blanks. Sts will read the sentences for a minute. Then, they will have to fill in the blanks with numbers so this time they will focus on the numbers, dates etc they hear. -They can check their answers with their friends first and then give them the audio script with the underlined numbers. Post= Discussion ---> Ask them "Some people think Steve Fosset is a hero, some others think these kinds of things are waste of money and time. What do you think?" *Discuss in pairs in 2 minutes. then get feedback.
