Materials

Abc Traditional Turkish food's picture, matching handouts.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of adjectives in the context of food.
  • To provide clarification of adjectives in the context of food while also focusing on word stress.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of food.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start to my lesson telling my favorite Turkish food; Manti. I will show them five different traditional Turkish food pictures. After I show pictures I will ask them their favorite Turkish food and I will ask them to list as many adjectives as they can for each picture (after ensuring they know what an adjective is). Then, I will distribute handouts to the students. I will tell them match the foods on the left with their tastes on the right. What other foods can you think of for each adjective of taste? I will give them two minutes to do this. They will work in pairs.

Test #1 (9-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

I will write cooking verbs on WB(Carve, stir, grate, drizzle, blend, add, squeeze, roast, fry, rub, cut out, bake, knead, roll, pour, beat, zest, simmer, peel, slice). Then, I will tell definitions for each cooking verbs. Next, I will tell students " Now, I will give you handouts. You need to match the verbs from the box with the pictures. " I will give them about seven minutes to complete their speaking activity in pairs.

Teach (8-9 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Now, we will focus primarily on word stress. ( Pour, sift, blend, beat, roll, stir, knead, bake, and grate) I will put students into groups and they will discuss word stress. I will make a list on the board . I will give instructions and give the first example. They need to listen to the word and "create" the word stress with their squares. They should complete their list based on their findings. They will work in pairs.

Test #2 (8-9 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Students will fill in the gaps with the cooking verbs. I will distribute handouts to the students and I will say " Now it is time to make Christmas gingerbread men! With your partner fill in the gaps with the cooking verbs." Then they will complete sentences based on the cooking verbs given (7 minutes). We will check some of these, and share. Students work in pairs.

Free practice (10-11 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Now, they will create their favorite food recipes task using cooking verbs from this lesson. Students will now think back to their favorite food or the special food of their region. Students choose foods. They will be placed with a partner and the pair will compare and contrast their chosen foods based on the words we have learned today and the format we used in the previous stage. We will share some of these comparisons at the end.
