Description

In this lesson students will learn about fears and transport. By the end of the lesson students will be able to talk about their fears that they have experienced when they were on a trip. They will be able to talk about phobias too.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about fear of flying in the context of phobias and transport

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a discussion in the context of phobias and transport

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To make Ss for this lesson

Teacher draws a line on the board and put some smiley faces on it. "sad" neutral" and "happy". Teacher also writes these words on the board: Flying, travelling, working, studying English, getting up, going out, being alone, going to parties, etc. Then T asks them to copy the line and write the words on the line to show their feelings. In pairs or small groups Ss ask each other about their line, Ex: Do you like travelling? Why?

Speaking (7-9 minutes) • To make student ready for the topic in the article

Teacher asks Ss to work in pairs or small groups and try to answer this questions on the board and teacher highlight the past tense which is used in these questions. ICQs: Are these questions in present tense? no will you answer this questions using past tense and past verbs? yes Teacher also can use one of the Ss to demonstrate the activity. Teacher can provide FB by asking each pair to tell the class about their conversation.

Gist (7-9 minutes) • To be able to get the idea of the magazine article

Teacher can pre-teach some vocabularies in the text and drill the words with Ss. Teacher tells Ss that they will have a text from a magazine article about "fear of flying". Teacher asks Ss to read the text and put the events in the correct order after they are done they can check their answers with their partner. Teacher can show the questions to Ss by using a over head projector. ICQs: Will you read the text individually? yes Will you tick the boxes? no Will you write numbers 1-4? yes After they are done teacher asks Ss to come to the board and write their answers but they also need to support their idea. FB if needed.

Scanning (8-10 minutes) • To be able to answer some questions related to the text

Teacher asks students to read the article again and this time they need to read it carefully. They have to answer some questions about the text. After they are done they can check their answers with their partner. Then teacher can ask Ss to answer the questions and also they need to support their idea tell the class why? ICQs: Will you read the article again? Are you going to do this exercise alone? yes Will you underline the exact sentence in the article? yes (to support your idea) FB if needed.

Post-reading task (9-10 minutes) • Ss can have a freer practice on this lesson

Teacher regroups Ss and then tells them to try to talk about these questions in their small groups. Ss can talk about their feelings which they learned about it the previous sessions. ICQs: Will you describe your feeling? yes Will you answer these questions with your group? yes Teacher can give FB at the end of the activity by asking each group to talk about what they have discussed. Teacher can also have error correction as well.
