Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice about holiday types in the context of holiday

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will personalize the language by telling my students that I'm taking a holiday and what I'm looking forward to on my holiday. Then I will ask them if they take a holiday every year and what they do there.

Pre-Listening (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

In this exercise, students check a list of things people usually look forward to on their holidays and decide whether a man or a woman wants to do these things.

Listening for Gist (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with gist and specific information listening task

Students listen six interviews with people going on holiday and check their answers to the pre-listening activity. Students then work in pairs in order to decide on the best alternative before having whole class feedback.

Listening for Detail (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening task

Students listen again to six interviews and answer specific questions about all the speakers. They fill in the chart with answers about each speaker. Students check answers in pairs then go to the white board to write the answers.

Listening for Detail 2 (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with another challenging detailed listening task

Students match extracts from the same listening to six speakers. Then they listen and check their answers in pairs before they report to class.

Post-Listening (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students now practice talking about what they most look forward to when they go on holiday. Having listened to a model language, students now will be able to discuss what they like doing on holiday using the target language in context.
