Description

The general context of the lesson is "lost and found". Ss will read and discuss the famous story " Life of Pi".Before the reading task, they willl watch the trailer of the film to have a clear insight of the story.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about Lost and Found in the context of "Life of Pi"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of shipwreck

Procedure

Warmer/Lead in (6-7 minutes) • To set the lesson context and engage the sts

T will ask the Ss to imagine as if they were going to be sent to a dessert island for an unknown length of time and they could take 5 essential things. The Ss make a list of the five thngs. Then ask them to tell their partner about their items.

Pre-Reading (6-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible.

Tell the Ss to look at the picture and ask them to describe the situation and the boy's and the tiger's feelings to each other. Monitor. Take feedback- How does the boy feel? etc. Then the Ss will watch the trailer of the film "LIfe of Pi".

While-Reading # 1 (8-11 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist and specific information reading task.

Before reading, T will check the meaning of the words "shipwreck, lifeboat and lifebuoy. The Ss will match the words with pictures.T will show HOs and ask the Ss to read the extract, using the glossary ( attached to the reading) to help them, and find out what Pi, the boy in the boat, learns about himself. Give out HOs. Ss work alone to answer the guestion, then check with a peer. Monitor and help where needed. w/c FB.

While-Reading # 2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging scan and specific information listening tasks

T will dispaly the collocations by using Power Point and have the Ss match them to make collocations from the text. The Ss check their answers by scanning the text for the collocations and reading them in context. Take feedback, focus on MFP - ask CCQs: desperate situation- Are you in a good or bad situation? (Bad), Are you worried about it?(Yes), Do you feel that have high or little hope to do smth? (Little) certain death- Do you think it can happen? (Yes), Do you know for sure? (Yes).

While-Reading # 3 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed reading task.

Tell Ss they are going to read the text again. Show the guestions and tell the Ss to read the questions and then read the text and answer the questions. Ss work alone to answer the guestions, then compare in pairs Monitor. w/c FB

Reading Task • To provide Ss an extra reading activity

If time, Ss will work together to discuss the guestion " How did Pi manage to surve?" T will give the background note, Ss read and check their answers.
