Description

In this lesson students listen and read a text about zaki's last Sunday. They will learn past simple tense of eight irregular verbs in both affirmative and negative forms. Then they will practice to use them to talk about their last Sunday.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice the use of simple past irregular verbs in the context of last Sunday.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Semi controlled writing practice in which students write about their last sunday.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T talks to Ss about her last Sunday and asks students to talk about the activities and things they did last Sunday.

Exposure & highlighting (4-6 minutes) • To get students to notice TL in context

T tells Ss they are going to listen and read a passage about Zaki's Sunday. T reads out the passage and gives Ss two mins to underline the past verbs and then check in pairs.T then asks Ss to write the words on the WB and clarifies meaning and drills pronunciation.

Reading for detail so Ss can read the text again and understand the TL in the text. (2-4 minutes) • For further clarification of the TL

T gives Ss a T&F activity and asks Ss to work in pairs. Then T checks answers with WC.

Controlled grammar practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check the use of simple past affirmative form before giving the Ss the negative form

T asks Ss to answer another activity where they have to change the verb from the simple present to the simple past irregular form. Check in pairs.T Monitors and asks some students to answer then focuses on any errors that need correction .

Exposure & clarification of MFP of the negative form of the simple past (6-8 minutes) • To clarify meaning, form and pronunciation

T elicits sentences from students and writes them on WB then T writes the negative form on the board and asks Ss if they understand the meaning and shows them the form then drills pronunciation. Subject + past simple verb (Affirmative) Subject + didn't + base form (Negative) T writes the verb in the past form on the WB and the Ss have to change it to the negative form.

Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check Ss understanding of the negative forms

T regroups Ss into three groups and gives them a HO. They have to change the sentence to negative. Check in groups. T monitors and asks one of the students to answer then gives class answer key & T gives FB.

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice of using simple past irregular verbs in talking about their last sunday

T elicits some example from Ss "what they did last Sunday" then T gives Ss pieces of paper and asks them to write four sentences of what they did last Sunday. T monitors Ss writing and then gives FB on any common errors.
