Teaching Practice 7
Upper-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, Students will learn causatives (get, have, and make) through a guided discovery based on a reading in the context of ‘getting things done by others’. The lesson starts with a Ss-centered activity of speaking and then after a short feedback the grammar lesson starts with the guided discovery HO. Students will be working in groups to complete different parts of the handout to figure eout the grammar, its meaning, its usage and its form as well and after each part we will have a quick WC feedback. After this stage, students will be given an answer key. The lesson continues with a controlled practice of multiple-choice and afterwards a semi controlled practice and then a freer practice at the end will happen in which students will be given a HO with some prompts and some names that they should try to make gossips using them.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Causatives (get, have and make) in the context of Get someone else to do something

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Get someone else to do something

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

As a Lead-in activity, which is to engage the students and activates the class at the start of the lesson, I will pair Ss by giving them two different names (Turkey, Istanbul) and ask them to seat in their pairs, one Turkey with one Istanbul, then I will give them a handout of three different questions which their context is related to the topic of the lesson and they will discuss the questions in pairs and after a short time (3min) i will ask them some questions randomly and will continue to the next activity.(1 min) Questions: Do you usually … + wash the dishes at home? Or you ask someone else to do? + wash your car yourself? Or you take it to carwash and ask them to wash it for you? + fix your own car or motorcycle or you ask a mechanic to fix them?

Presentation (Guided Discovery) (19-22 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language and clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language through a GD

At the start of this stage, I will give Ss the Guided Discovery HO. The HO has got three different parts( Meaning, Function and Form of the TL) on it, and I will instruct the Ss to fold the HO in the way that they can only see the Meaning part which consists different questions without answers for helping them to get the concept by cheking their gueses. Questions: 1. In sentence [a], who is the Subject of the sentence? Ms. Karauss’s boss, No Did he/she do the job himself/herself? (If –No, Who did it?) Ms. Karauss 2. In sentence [b], [c], who is the subject? Who did the job? –[b] Mr. Li and [c] Ms. Karauss -Sam did the job 3. In which sentence, the person is forced to do something? –[a] 4. In which sentence, the person is convinced to do something? –[c] 5. In which sentence, the person is asked (requested) to do something? –[b] I will group them by the mean of colored papers and put them in two or three different groups (Depends on the number of the Ss) and get to answer the questions together with their partners and try to figure the meaning of the TL out. Then I will stop them and do a WC feedback and ask answers from different groups and provide them with correct answers whilst.(6min) Afterwards, I will instruct them to unfold the paper and they will again be working on the same groups for answering the Function part of the HO and whilst, i will write the marker sentences on the board in order to use them for drilling activity later. a) Ms. Karauss boss made her copy the documents. b) Mr. Li had Sam make up sales binders for him. c) Ms.Karauss got Sam to copy her documents. Then, I will ask each group for their answers as a WC feedback.(5min) Then, I will gather all their attentions and ask them to stand up and I will do some backchain drilling in order to practice the pronunciation of the target language as well.(3min) Now I will get them to unfold the Ho completely and complete the forms of different causatives regarding their usages and functions. After a couple of minutes i will give them the Answers' HO and ask them to check their answers against the Key.(5min)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will provide them with a controlled practice activity which is a Gap-filling HO to answer in order to concept check. I will give them a short time and ask them to do it individually(4min) and then I will ask them to check their answers in pairs with their partners(2min). Whilst I will give them the answer key to the practice.(2min)

Free Practice (12-13 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

To have a productive skill, I will give them a HO with some prompts on it. I will instruct them to imagine that they are all living in the same neighbour hood and those prompts which are names, are their neighbours' names with some ideas in front of them. Each student must come up with one gossip about each neighbour using the prompts, then they will be sharing their ideas as gossios with their friends in a mingling activity.(8min) Afterwards, I will get them to try to remember and share some of their friends gossips with the class as a feedback.(4min
