Present continuous for ''now ',
Elementary level


In this lesson , ss learn about the present continuous through a listening task . The lesson starts with a lead-in activity inttroducing some key vocabulary. Then, the ss do a listening for gist and a listening for details activities .After that , the ss are exposed to the TL through a clarification table of form and meaning of the present continuous. The ss then, check their understanding through a controlled practice . Finally , there is a speaking practice activity .

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the present continous for ''now'' in the context of work

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about telephone conversation in the context of work


Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-set the context by presenting some key vocabulary that will be useful for the listening ,the grammar and the speaking practice part. - set ss into two groups -stick pictures on the board -give ss the cut-ups cotaining and ask them to the match the phrases with the appropriate pictures . - WC feedback -model and drill the phrases .

Exposure (7-9 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-tell the ss they are going to do a listening about work . -give the students the listening HO and ask them to look at pictures 1 and 2 and talk about them ( where are they ? what is Frank's problem? ) in pairs , for one minute . -ask them to listen to the recording and check their guessings -WC FB -give ss time to read the sentences in Exercice 2.tell then they are going to listen again to the recording , carefully , and answer do the exercice - ss check their answers in pairs . -give answerkey HO

Highlighting (3-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-write example sentence on the board :'' I'm waiting for a taxi'' -ask '' where is the verb of the sentence ? and '' which tense is it ? '' -elicit the form

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-give the ss the gap filling HO and ask them to complete the table with the correct form and their own exapmles - ss check their answers in pairs - project the exercice on the board and nominate some ss to write the answers on the board - check the meaning -model and drill

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-give ss the HO and ask them to complete the sentence, individually by putting the verbs in the present continuous . -ss check their answers in pairs -give them the answer key HO -ask ss if they have any questions

Free Practice (11-13 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-set ss into 2 groups (Group A and Group B) -give ss in group A handout A ( pg 110 ) -give ss in group B handout B (pg 118) -ss work in pairs with someone from their group and take turns to discribe the things in the picture using the TL . - tell ss that there 11 differences between the pictures - ask ss to work with their same partners to write questions tothe other group to find the differences -draw the ss' attention to the examples in the box. - while ss are working ,check their questions for accuracy. -put ss in pairs with one ss from each group to from the pairs. -tell ss that they are not allowed to look at their partner's picture. -ss take turns to ask and answer questions about the pictures in order to find the 11 diffrences . - ss work with their first partners from their own group and compare the differences they found . -check answers with the WC .
