reading "The Masters of the Universe"

Description

In this lesson, SS will start their lesson with warm up. Then a lead in with some images and discussion. A matching activity will be the pre-reading step and SS gathering of the whole text parts. While reading stage will be set by two tasks the first one, each group will read a paragraph then swap with the other groups and tell them about their reading. The second task will be by figuring out the correct title for each paragraph. As a post reading task SS will be given a crossword handout. Then SS will choose their master of the world and talk about him without mentioning his/her name and the other group will guess who he/she is.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about the masters of the world

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation

Procedure

Warmer (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher leads in the lesson with a short greeting activity. The teacher asks SS to mingle and shakes hands and greet each other.At the beginning as if meeting for the first time,then as if you are very rich men/women at very expensive cocktail party...... finally as if you are meeting your boss.

lead-in (3-5 minutes) • to set the context

The teacher starts clarifying her topic by asking SS: "If you were a billionaire, what would you change or make a difference in the world. The teacher shows SS some pictures of famous people. Starting with Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Vehbi Koc.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher challenges SS in the next activity. She groups them, and gives them cut ups of the text. Each group will be having different part of the text. Then SS will gather and match the paragraphs together.

While-Reading (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

SS will work in groups. Each group will read a paragraph. Then SS will change seats and tell the other groups what they read and understand. SS will share their background about the text.

While-Reading/ 2 (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

SS will be given titles for paragraphs to be matched correctly. Then the answers will be checked as a whole class work. On the same page there will be another activity. SS will answer with true and false. The SS in their groups will line up in front of the white board and be ready for the competition. The board will be divided into two columns true and false. SS will run to board after listening to the teacher's question and choose the correct answer with explanation. The faster is the winner.

Post-Reading, first activity. (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with a challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

SS will answer a crossword activity. They will read the definitions of specific vocabulary and find them in the text. In this stage SS show whether they understand the meanings of the words or they need eliciting.

Post-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

To wrap up the lesson, the teacher asks each group to choose their master of the world,only one person,without mentioning his name. Then each group will appoint a speaker and talk about him. and the other group will figure out who the person is.
