Description

In this lesson, Sts will watch a short video, learn some action verbs and do reading, which will help them to learn how to talk about abilities or disabilities, also how to form the questions. Also, speaking practice they will have a chance to produce the TL.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, practice and review of modals of ability in the context of special people

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation and acting in the context of personal abilities

Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Sts watch a 2:38 min video from youtube Then T asks Sts to talk and write some examples from the video with their partner 2-3 Sts come to the board and write their examples T asks them to act the sentences

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To personalise the topic and engage the student's interest

T gives HO1 to Sts and asks them to match the verbs with related pictures T does the first one as an example Then T checks the answers with WC Sts try to produce more example sentences using the new words

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T distributes HO2 and asks "Who are these people? Then Sts read the texts and fill in the gaps in exercise 2 individually then check with their pairs T checks the answers with WC T writes the people's names on the board " Nathan, Janice, Isaac" and asks students "What can he/she do?" T writes one positive sentence for each of them then shows three different pictures "a wheelchair, a man with a dog and a person trying to hear" T tells Sts that each of these people has a disability Sts work with their parters and guess, then come to the board match the pictures with the people and try to write a sentence for disabilities

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T underlines the modal verbs and asks Sts to look at the sentences T elicits some information from the Sts by asking CCQs T underlines the sentence structure and writes the form T models the pronunciation of TL, drills and uses backchaining

Controlled Practice 1 (3-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Sts look at the exercise 1 in the HO T tells that there are 4 mistakes Sts find the mistakes and correct them, later check their answers first with their partners then with the teacher

Controlled Practice 2 (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T shows the flashcards to the Sts and gives the instructions T writes "You can ........" on the board Each St comes to the board looks at the card and mimes the verb, the others try to find the verb and use it in a sentence. (If the number of Sts is adequate, T divides the classroom into two groups and make it as a competition)

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and produce the TL

T shows the HO4 to the Sts and gives the instructions Sts listen and read the example on the HO Sts stand up, mingle and ask questions to different people (T plays a background music to energize the Sts) Sts later report to the T and to WC
