Main Aims

  • To provide review, clarification and practice of reported speech in the context of when people speak to the media

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about that's what I meant! in the context of when people speak to the media.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show four photos of some people with different facial expressions and situations, students have to guess what are these people are talking about. (on the white board)

Test #1 (10-15 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

I will give students HO to read. Students will read the unfortunate quotes that people have given to the media (individual reading), and then they pick and share with the class one of these quotes that they liked most. Another HO will be given to the students, contains some sentences of the previous task but they are the "reported version" of the direct speech. Students will underline the differences between the direct and reported versions in pairs. Students will get their third HO contains some questions related to the form and some rules, in order to test their knowledge.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Teacher will get the students' answers about the previous task, during the feedback, the teacher will provide the students with the right rules and form of the reported speech. An AK will be given also.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Students will listen to Bebbie and eight more people reporting what others said. Then, they should identity who were not saying the truth. Then, they will be asked to work in pairs and put the remaining quotes from the first exercise (G-I) into reported speech. A feedback will be done with the whole class. The last HO will be a list of sentences with some underlined mistakes; students should correct these mistakes in pairs.

Free practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Some photos with bubble speeches will be presented. Students will set in pairs and report these bubbles. A whole class feedback will be done after this activity.
