Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of vocabulary about hotel facilities in the context of hotels.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students practice speaking for fluency in the context of hotels.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To introduce vocabulary about hotel facilities and engage students.

I will personalize the target language by telling them that one of my friend is coming to Istanbul and he asks me for advice about a good hotel. Then I will ask students about the best hotel in Istanbul and what it has. I will elicit words on the board and show pictures of the difficult ones.

Vocabulary Focus: Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To provide context to the target language through words and pictures

In this exercise, students match phrases in a box to pictures. then practice saying the words. This exercise helps them see pictures of the concrete nouns.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form, and pronunciation of the target language.

In this exercise, I will check students understand the meaning of the key words by asking CCQs. I will also draw their attention to the form and pronunciation of these words.

Vocabulary Exposure: Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for meaningful practice.

In this exercise, students complete words in the description of a hotel. They are given the first letter and they have to work missing out. Students can work together to complete this activity. Then one of the students goes to board to do the first one and then another students does the next and so on.

Vocabulary Focus: Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To give students the chance to practice the target language and to prepare them for freer practice

In this exercise, students work in pairs and choose one situation out of three. They have to decide what hotel facilities are most important for that situation and why. After that, each pair report back to the class.

Follow-up Activity: Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language.

I will divide the class into two teams. one team sends one member to the front, who then sits facing the class, with their back to the board. Thus everyone except this student can see what I write on the board. The team of the student sitting at the front must define the word or give examples of its use without saying the actual word itself. The team who guesses the word first gets a point. students can use rhyme, collocations, synonyms, etc to guess the word.
