Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about In the city of York in the context of Travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of "Visiting a new place words" in the context of "Travel"
  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of travel.

Procedure

Lead-in (7-10 minutes) • To set the context

I will show ss a few photos of various cities across the world and let them guess which one it is. I will end up with a picture of York. As they will probably not guess and know it, I will surround it with words such as "tourists, castle, north" and etc. and make them ask me questions related to York with the provided vocab and will be ready to provide the answers for them.

Pre-listening task (3-5 minutes) • To elicit the vocabulary students will hear during the listening

Ask students to look at the photos. "What can you see?". I will try and elicit the words "a train station", "a play", "a poster", "a castle", "a museum". Here I might pre-teach words such as "map" and "tourist information centre".

Listening, 1st part (4-6 minutes) • Listening for gist

Play the recording. Students listen and match conversations with pictures. Whole class feedback takes place.

Listening, 2nd part (7-9 minutes) • Detailed Listening

Give students 1 minute to read through the answers. Give instructions: "Which one is correct?". Play the recording. Ss listen and choose the correct answer. Pair-check and then a WCFB takes place.

Listening, 3rd part (5-7 minutes) • Listening for specific information in the context of Survival English

p.64 / ex.1 Give instructions: "Complete the phrases". Play the recording. WCFB. Drill each sentence with students.

Controlled speaking (6-8 minutes) • To help students memorize particular vocab patterns

Write one of the dialogues from ex.2 on the board. Divide the class into two teams. One student from each team reads the conversation while I erase words. When a student can't guess a word the other team gets a point.
