Lesson #6 CELTA Course. Receptive Skills Lesson: Listening
Pre-Intermediate level

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide listening for gist and specific information in the context of singing

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of singing and favorite things to do in general

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in the topic prior to listening.

T puts pictures on the WB - What do all these pictures have in common? (people can sing in all these places - in the shower, in the car, at karaoke bars, while listening to favorite music in the player, in a choir /'kwaɪə/, in a band). Divide Ss into pairs: they should ask each other do they ever sing and where. Then WC feedback.

Pre-Listening (5-5 minutes) • to introduce the topic of the text for listening and give the pre-listening task for deduction

T tells Ss that they are going to listen to an interview with a director of a singing school and a student who did a course there. As they will speak they will discuss these topics (Ex 5b p 55) Now, with your partner, please read the sentences and decide, if you think they are True (T) or False (F). Put the appropriate letter next to each sentences. ICQs!

While-Reading/Listening #1 (7-12 minutes) • To provide students with deduction listening task

Now, please listen to an interview with the director of a singing school. Listen the interview, then look at the sentences and work with your partner: decide, if you were right or wrong. ICQs! Ss listen to the interview, then work in pairs. Then WC feedback.

While-Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

T gives students 6 multiple choice questions. Then T plays the recording once again for Ss to listen and choose the right answer. ICQs! Replay if necessary. (Ex 5d p55)

Post-Listening (Freer Practice) (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to expand on the topic of their favorite/lest favorite things to do

Ex 4b p 55 T gives Ss (each pair) a list of topics. They should choose 5 topics to discuss with their partner. Feedback (Ss tell what they have found out about their partner in a pair).
