Description

In this lesson, we will look at the structures of verbs which are followed by the ing form and which can be used to express complain and give advice and suggestions. They will then have controlled practice which is a gap-fill exercise. The students will produce the TL in a controlled speaking practice.

Main Aims

  • To enable students to practice verb +ing in the context of complaining and giving advice and suggestions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide semi-controlled speaking practice in pairs in the context of things students are not happy about.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead in (3-5 minutes) • To set the lesson context and engage the sts

Set the context by drawing the students' attention to what they have been listening in the previous lesson and ask the following questions: What's his problem? What did the technician advise him to do? Did Vishal follow her advice?

Focus on meaning (10-11 minutes) • to draw students' attention to the meaning and uses of the target language

Explain to the students that they are going to match some example sentences from the listening passage that they have listened to in the prior lesson with their meaning and uses. Give out the match HOs and have the students do the task in pairs. Feeadback: T will write the answers on the WB. After T will draw a table and have SS categorize the sentences as complain and give advice and suggestions. Feedback: Elicit the answers. T will ask CCQs for keep+ing, avoid+ing and face+ing sentences. keep going wrong- does it happen many times? ( Yes) Is it a continuous process? or does it go on over and over?(Yes). avoid leaving it on- do you choose to leave it on? (No) do you decide to stop leaving it on?( Yes) do you try not to leave it on? (Yes) face moving-do you want to do it? (No) is it difficult/unpleasant? (Yes)

Focus on meaning • to focus on the form of the target language.

T wiil elicit the form of the model sentences on the WB. What's this? (keep-verb), What's this? (ing)

Focus on pronunciation (2-3 minutes) • to practice pronunciation in the context of complaint

T will drill the following sentences: My router keeps going wrong. I can't face moving everyting again.

Controlled written practice (5-7 minutes) • to practice the TL.

SS complete the blanks in the staements about complaint and advice. Feedback: SS listen to the recording to check their answers.

Controlled practice (4-5 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice the TL

Twill divide SS into two groups and will have the SS answer the question: What would they do in Vishal's situation? SS will have 2 min to discuss the question. T wiil elicit the answer from both of the groups.

Speaking Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond and practice the TL

SS will tell their new partner about two things they are not happy about in their life. It could be: something they have to do at work/at school/at university etc. someone who is annoying him/her at the moment. Feedback: S will tell about his/her partner.

Speaking Practice (6-7 minutes) • To provide extra activities to develop fluency
