  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Discussion in the context of Dictionaries

Subsidiary Aims

  • To pre-teach some vocabularies in order to ask the Ss to work with dictionaries.

Procedure

Lead in (6-8 minutes) • Intoducing the theme of the lesson: Dictionaries

I will write four to five words on the board and ask the Ss to work in small groups in order to find each word in the dictionary they usually use. (book or an electronic) They must find the meaning, pronunciation, part of speech and an example for each word. Then teacher asks each group to go to the board and write their answers on the board to see which dictionary gave most information and to find out which one's weren't on the task.

Speaking (7-8 minutes) • To get a brief view of the lesson

Teacher writes three questions on the board and asks Ss to talk in pairs or small groups and try to answer these questions: 1. What languages do you speak? 2. Do you have any of these things? an English dictionary/ a bilingual dictionary/ a phrasebook/ an electronic dictionary 3. How often do use use them? Ss might not know the meaning of the word "Bilingual dictionary" by using realia or picture teacher can help them with the meaning. After the discussion teacher will have a brief FB.

Pre-reading (6-7 minutes) • To make the Ss ready for the readings

Teacher puts the picture of two machines (that can both translate languages) on the board by using OHP. And asks them "What are they?" "What do they do?" Teacher also needs the new words which describe the machines. Teacher can scan the phrases and put them on the board as well with the OHP or teacher can write those phrases on the board and with miming he/she can make sure that the know the meaning of this phrases. Then by giving one or two examples about the machines Ss can start with their own description of the machines in their small groups of A&B

Gist (4-6 minutes) • To check their answers about the articles

Ss are divided to two gproups of A&B. Each group will read their own article to check whether their answers were correct or wrong. Teacher can provide the answers with an answer key. Have FB if neded.

Scanning (6-8 minutes) • To read the articles for specific information

Teacher asks the Ss to read the text again and try to match the sentences ( which are on the board by using OHP) to the products. They can check their answers with their partner and then teacher can ask Ss to come to the board and write name of each device in front of the correct sentence.

Language Machines (5-6 minutes) • For further practice

Teacher can give a hand out based on a activity in the WB for further practice of the Ss. Again by using the OHP Ss can write their answers on the board for checking their answers.
