Description

In this lesson, students learn about how do people get together using new ways, through a guided discovery based on a reading task. The lesson starts with a warmer to set a context (of getting together) via the use of some pictures. This is followed by an activity where students should discuses some questions related to the topic. Later there will be a skim reading activity, followed by a short speaking one.Match the definitions will be placed also in order to prepare the students for the next task where they should discuss certain questions related to the text .Finally there will be a group discussion by answering questions about the whole topic.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about new ways people use to get together in the context of getting together.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of getting together

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

First I will use some personal photos/ a short story to set the context and engage the students, then I will ask them to share their personal experience of did they meet their boy/girlfriend or wife/husband.

Pre-Reading (7-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Three questions will be written on the white board - How do people get to know new friends - How do people get in touch with old friends - How do people can meet a future partner The students set in pairs and make a list of ways people can do the things above. Then they will compare their lists with the other students.

While-Reading (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Students will be asked to skim the text and then to explain briefly how people get together in each case and what kind of people is each way most suitable for. Later on, a list of expressions and definitions will be given, students should find their matches.

While-Reading (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

In order to get a more detailed information about some specific questions that the teacher will give to students, the students should read for details and check their answers in pairs.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In small groups students will discuss some questions and share their opinions about the ways of meeting people.
