In this lesson, students will begin with learning new vocabulary of places around a city or town. They will drill these words and and play a game based around these words. They will then practice gist and detailed reading.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about My home town in the context of Towns and cities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Places in town or city in the context of My home town


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will pin 9 pictures on the board of different places in a city/town on the WB. Next to the pictures will be strips of paper pinned on the WB, the strips of paper will be the names of each place. The students will take a strip of paper and pin it to its correct picture. The teacher should then check that they are correct in FB. If there are any errors the teacher should move the paper to its correct picture.

Vocabulary task (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text

The teacher will drill the words with the students. The teacher should drill numerous times and two times make emphasis on the stress point of each word. The teacher can make emphasis of the stress by putting their finger to their mouth when the stress point arrives. The teacher should also get a few individual students to say some of the words by pointing at the picture and the students says the word.

Vocabulary activity (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with practice and clarification of the vocabulary

The teacher will pin the pictures on the board, The teacher will then split the students in to two teams. One team called city and the other team called town. The teacher will then get the two teams into two single file lines facing the WB. The teacher will demo the game, the aim of the game is for students to grab the picture from the board of whatever word the teacher shouts out. If the students fail to understand from the teachers instructions, the teacher should ask one of the other CELTA trainers to come up to the board and demo with the teacher.

Pre reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide students reading for gist

Students will then be given a HO of a reading text. Allow students to briefly look at the HO. Explain to the students they are going to read the text whilst listening it to the same time. Set the task of whether Susan likes living in Bath or not? Allow the students to listen and read the text only once. Once they have finished, get FB from the students as a WC

While-Reading (10-15 minutes) • To provide detailed reading looking for detailed information

The teacher will then present the 6 questions from the HO. Explain that they need to answer these questions while they are reading the text. Allocate the students into pairs and then let them start the task. Allow the students a significant amount of time to read and answer the questions. Once the students have completed the questions, tell them they can find the answer key under their chair. Allow students to check their answers in the same pairs.

If time - Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To review and practice the vocabulary

Ask students the question, "What is there in your town?" The students should be able to answer you using the vocabulary learnt at the beginning half of the lesson.
