Description

This lesson will focus on "listening for comprehension" and "speaking for fluency" in the context of Global Issues. The lesson starts with a conversation about some global issues, and is continued by students working in threes and discuss global issues as teacher gives them a topic each time, and getting some reflection from them every time. The lesson is followed by listening to conversations at a party about global issues and highlight the issues, then continued by a repeated listening of the tape script for checking the students' answers. Students listen to the recording once again, this time focusing on questions that they will be told to underline so as to improve their listening skills by listening for details.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I start the lesson by putting a picture on the wall and asking students about global issues that they know about, in order to engage students. I go through the issues that figure in the paper on the wall, elicit their meaning and drilling pronunciation, and then have students work in twos and come up with any information about world issues they know about.

Pre-Listening Stage (12-13 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening part and make it accessible

I display sentences related to global issues and have students say which issues the sentences match with. I tell students to work in pairs and discuss about any other issue they think is a global issue. Then, I have them speak out and share information with the class. Next, I tell them to work in twos again, discuss about important issues at the moment in Turkey and have them briefly share information with the class.

While-Listening Stage (16-17 minutes) • To provide students with listening for details and specific information.

I tell students to listen to four conversations at a party, and identify which global issues are being discussed. Then I give students handouts with sentences on 4 conversations which they will listen, complete the gaps with a word from the box and check their own answers to the previous guesses. I give students handouts with tape script on them tell them to listen to the 4 conversations again and underline questions in the tape script. To finalize the listening part, I ask students if they know about Michael Jackson first, and then ask them about his song called, Earth Song. I ask them if they can predict what the song can be about, and after getting some answers I play the song associated visually using the overhead projector so as students can follow the song by reading the lyrics

Post-listening Stage (6-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I tell students that I will give them the text from the Earth Song so as they work in pairs and skim the text and come up with a sentence that would best describe the moral of the song. If there are 2-3 minutes left, I tell students to work in pairs and speak about what people can do to save the world from pollution, wars, poverty and diseases, and come up with an answer.
