Main Aims

  • To practise the Ss' skills of listening for gist and details in the context of nationalities

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson students will have reviewed and practised vocabulary of nationalities

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To introduce the topic of the lesson to the students and to engage them in it

The teacher offers the students to recall the game activity they had the day before talking about the countries they had visited. Then the teacher shows the world map and says that there are many countries in the world, and there are many different nationalities in the world and also also people speak many different languages. After that the students work in pairs making their guesses how many countries, nationalities and languages are there in the world. The teacher receives a feedback by moninating students to answer the questions. The teacher gives the correct answers and writes the figures on the board. The students check their guesses.

Vocabulary and Listening - 1 (2-3 minutes) • To practice listening to the people from different countries and accents and to introduce the new nationality words

The teacher asks students to read and listen to the six introductions of people from different countries and to underline the nationality words.

Vocabulary and Listening - 2 (2-5 minutes) • To check the understanding and correct usage of the nationality words

The teacher shows the table in the handout and asks the students to complete this table with the nationalities from the previous exercise. Meanwhile, the teacher also writes the nationalities oin the board to let the students check their answers.

Vocabulary and Listening - 2 Feedback (5-8 minutes) • To check the understanding of the nationality words, to drill the pronounciation of the words, marking the stress

The teachers nominates students to tell their answers. As students say the correct answer, the teacher marks the stress on the board and then drill the pronunciation with the class and individually, if needed.The teacher also points to the correct stress of the words with -ese suffix and drill the pronunciation with the class.

Pre-Listening -1 (2-3 minutes) • To prepare the students to the listening activity following this one by creating an intrigue and thus making the students interested

The teacher shows the students two columns of country names and cities and asks the students to match a city with its country. The teacher asks to split into pairs and do this activity pairs.

Pre-Listening -1 Feedback (2-3 minutes) • To check the students understand the country names and cities in English

The teacher checks the answers by nominating one student from each pair

Pre-Listening -2 (2-3 minutes) • To give the students an unexpected information in order to interest them in the activity following after this one

The teacher shows the world map and points to the cities, which are located in countries different fromthe commonly known

Listening for Gist (3-7 minutes) • To practise listening for gist in the given context

The teacher offers to listen to three short conversations and to make a guess where these conversations could take place. While the students are listening, the teacher put three pictures of a hotel lobby, an airport and a party on the board.

Listening for Detail (5-7 minutes) • To practise listening for detail in the given context

The teacher asks the students to listen to the three dialogs once again, after that the students have to mark the correct option in the three sets of sentences in the exercise in the book. The students do it in pairs.

Listening for Detail - Feedback (1-3 minutes) • To check the understanding of the texts they had heard

The teacher checks the answers by nominating the students from the pairs

IF Time - Speaking (3-8 minutes) • To practise speaking in pairs in the given context

The teacher asks the students to split into pairs. The students have to tell their partner whether they have any foreign friends and tell about these friends, where they are from, which country and city, what nationality they are and what language they speak, what language they speak when they meet.
