Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about Free time ctivities in the context of Working in Antarctica

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Free time activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

by using the OHP, I show Ss a table that gives them an opportunity to guess the context. Afterwards, I ask some questions (Do you like weekends?, Do you go out with your friends?, Is it good to work at weekends?) to engage them and attract their interest. Then, I play a short clip related to the topic. After the video, I elicit "Free time activity".

Teaching Vocabulary and Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To introduce new vocabulary and prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I introduce the vocabulary one by one by using pictures and try to elicit, drill in different patterns and show them the written form to Ss. Then I show them the pictures again and they have to remember the words. From "go skiing" on, I focus on the form (go+verb+ing) and I also highlight the use of 'the ' in 'listen to the radio'. Then, I give them HO1 and give instructions by OHP and Ss should stand up and do the task in a mingling activity. After a short time Ss sit down and I do an open pair feedback. Afterwards, I elicit "Antarctica" and "Weather station" by pictures. At last, I show them Paul's picture and They should answer some questions before listening to the recording.

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I give them HO2 and instruct them to listen to the recording and answer the questions and then they check their answers with a partner.Afterwards, I do a WC feedback.

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I give them HO3 and instruct them to answers some detailed questions while listening. Then, they check their answers in pairs and whilst I give them HO4 as an answer key.

Post-Listenign (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I give them a chart that shows the different activities that Paul does in his free time. They should make some questions about him regarding the chart in pairs.
