Description

In this lesson Ss will practice their listening for gist and details, and then they will learn about the usage of supposed to and meant to.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about being locked out in the context of a change of plan

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice and clarification of be supposed to and be meant to in the context of a change of plan

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T explains to the Ss the meaning of 'locked yourself out' and 'broken out' by showing them some pictures. Then the T asks the Ss answer ex 1 and after that T takes FB

Listening task 1 (8-10 minutes) • listening for main idea

T show the Ss the picture of Rob and tries to elicit the situation from them and then T asks them how he might get into his house and elicits the word ladder. Then after that the teacher allows the Ss to read the questions, then play recording 1.44. For FB T sticks the answers on the walls and asks the Ss to go and check their answers.

Listening task 2 (6-8 minutes) • listening for detail

T asks the learners to read the sentences about Rob's situation and to tick or correct them. Then plays recording 1.44 again so they can check their answers. For FB T asks one S from each group to take the role of the teacher and to explain to his/her group the answers.

Listening task 3 (5-7 minutes) • To round off the listening

T gets some ideas from the class about how Rob will get back into his house. Then plays recording 1.45 so learners can check their ideas and round off the listening.

Vocabulary and function focus 1 (3-5 minutes) • To elicit the TL language of the lesson

T asks the Ss to do ex 4 and then takes FB.

Vocabulary and function focus 2 (5-7 minutes) • To elicit the meaning, form and pronunciation of the TL

T writes one or some sentences on the board from ex 4 and tries from it to elicit the meaning, form, and pronunciation from the Ss.

Vocabulary and function practice (3-5 minutes) • To practice the TL

T asks the Ss to work in pairs and answer ex 5. Then T takes FB and rounds off the lesson.
