Description

In this lesson, students will read a text named "Amazing Ocean Facts." With this reading activity they will practice scan reading as well as reading in detail. They will also practice free speaking.

Materials

Abc Reading text and exercises

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed and scan reading practice using a text about ocean facts in the context of sea

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of sea

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set the context for the lesson and engage sts

Stick some funny pictures with some amazing ocean facts writes on. Tell sts to stand up, go to the pictures and read the facts. Ask sts whether they liked the facts and pics or not. Ask sts what did they find interesting.

Pre-Reading (3-4 minutes) • To get students ready for the text and engage them with oceans.

Divide sts into pairs. Give sts small papers that names of the oceans and the neighbor countries have on. Tell them to match the countries with the oceans. Get WCFB.

While Reading-1 (8-10 minutes) • To practice detailed reading

Tell them to read the text " Amazing Ocean Facts." Ask them to give each fact a rank from 1 to 3. When they finish, ask them them which facts they already knew, what they got for each fact and ask the reasons.

While Reading-2 (6-8 minutes) • to practice detailed reading and get the attention to the adjectives to make the sentences sound amazing

Tell sts that they are going to find language the author used to make the facts more interesting and amazing. Do the first one as a group then leave the rest to the sts. When they finish, ask sts the answers.

Post-Reading (12-16 minutes) • To practice free speaking in the context of sea

In pairs, sts choose three of the Qs and discuss together. When they finish, tell sts to change pairs. Each st will talk about the questions that he/she has chosen with the previous pair. When they finish their discussions, get the WCFB by asking sts thoughts.
