Description

In this lesson, students will read about three different kinds of parties. First students will try to guess, what's today's reading about during lead in. This is followed by gist. The students will read the texts and try to find out the titles. The gist is followed by reading for specific information. Students are going to fill out a form for each party. To get further, students will read the texts in details again and decide whether the sentences true or false. As a post activity, students will think of a party and describe it to class.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greets students. Shows a picture of clothes and asks: -"Where am I going with these clothes?" Elicits "To a party". Asks : -" Do you go to parties?" "Who likes going to the parties? Who doesn't like going to the parties?" "Can you look at the pictures and talk with your partner about what things you see?" Says: "Today, we will read about three different parties".

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher shows some photos of different kinds of parties and asks for the themes. Draws student's attention to different kinds of parties. Says : "Look at these pictures." "Are they same kind of parties?" Shows pictures of "surprise party, birthday party, baby shower party, graduation party, tea party" Elicits the names. Says : -"When I say party, what comes to your mind?" Elicits the answers and writes them on the board. Now, let's have a look at some more things that we can see at parties. Projects the PPT (invitation card, costumes, throwing a party, pyjamas, karaoke) using MPF. Clarifies the meaning by showing pictures. Models and drills.

While-Reading gist (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Reflects the titles on PPT. Asks : -"Look at the titles and share your ideas with your friend". Show the HOs and asks: -" How many people are there?" "They are talking about different kinds of parties." Projects the three titles of " Garden Party, Sleepover Party and Costume Party". Says: -"Read the text quickly and match the text with the titles." Sets time. Students check their answers with their partners. The teacher asks whole class to give answers.

While-Reading - Reading for specific information (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The teacher asks students to find some specific information from the text (name, type of party, time, place, what to wear, what to eat, kind of music) Says: -"Now, you will read again and fill in this form". Monitors. Students pair check after they finish. Elicits and uses the board as a solid feedback.

While-reading , Reading for details (10-12 minutes) • to provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The teacher says: -"Now, let's read the three texts in details." Shows the HOs and says: -"There are some sentences. Some are true, some are false. Read the texts again but this time in details and write true or false." Sets time, Monitors. Students check their answers in pairs, discuss on false sentences and the teacher gives the answer key as a solid feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students create their own ideas of parties.First they talk about new party types. The teacher shows PPT and presents her own party type including the information given. Students take notes in groups and discuss later on. The teacher says : "Now, it's your turn to organise your party. Think of some party types." - "Look at my party type." Now you do the same. Groups students. Shows the HOs and says : "With your group, organise a party, decide on the name, time, food and drink, music type etc". Take some notes". Monitors and listens in discreetly to collect overheard errors. Uses to list to provide sentences to discuss later on.

extra activity (5-6 minutes)

The teacher writes the names of the people from the texts and shows the balloons and says : "There are sentences in the balloons. First blow up the balloons, then read the sentences and find the person". Groups students. Sets time. Plays on some music. Monitors. "
