Reading lesson - Vacabulary-
Elementary level

Description

In the present lesson, students are introduced to the target language through a lead in activity which is closely related to the reading passage. The lesson follows the stages of a purely receptive skills lesson since our major emphasis is on reading. Students are required to skim the text to get the over all meaning then scan the text so as to come up with speficif information as required. The lesson incorporates a speaking activity to give students a chance to practice the target language.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher greets his students and welcomes them to class again. The teacher elicits from students some vocabulary related to jobs and prepares them for the reading passage. The teacher asks students about people they know and who probably have more than two jobs. The teachers gets feedback and right after the teacher gives instructions about the next activity -pre reading-.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher pairs up students and gives them different pictures about the major character of the reading passage.The pictures are about a man working in different jobs throughout the day. The teacher gives strips of paper with information about the picture and students are aksed every sentence with its correnspending picture while discussing. The teacher gets whole class feedback and get students interested in the topic while activating their schemata.

While-Reading (12-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

The teacher gives handouts to the students containing the target language '' reading passage''. In this stage, the teacher will ask students to skim the text quickly and choose the best title from the titles given to them. Students will work in pairs as allocated by the teacher. The teacher gets feedback from the students and sets the context for the next activity. The teacher gives instructions, students will have to work in pairs and provide the main idea of the reading passage. The teacher gets feedback and opens up a class based discussion leading to the next activity.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading

The teacher sets the context for the following activity and asks students to scan the text - read it carefully- and answer some comprehension questions individually. The teacher asks students to compare their answers before getting feedback and correcting the false answers through elicitation then clear up some vocabulary that might be unclear. The teacher gives three statements about the text and get students to decide if they are false or true. The teacher gets feedback and make delayed error correction if any before moving to the next activity

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on learning points

The teacher gives instructions about the next activity, students will have to speak to each other and find out daily routines of their partners and taking notes. The teacher monitors the activity and takes notes of the mistakes made by learners. Students will switch rules on teacher's cue. The teacher checks if students are all on task and gets whole class feedback
