Teaching Practice 3

Description

In this lesson, Ss learn the negative and question form of the Present simple for I/you/we/day in the context of routine activities of evenings and weekends. A review of a listening which provides the context will start the lesson. Afterwards, I will present the grammatical structures on the WB considering MFP order followed by series of controlled, semi-controlled and freer activities. At the end, a speaking activity will finish the lesson.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Present simple negative for I/you/we/they in the context of Evenings and weekends routines
  • To provide clarification and practice of Present simple questions (short answers) for I/you/we/day

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Evenings and weekends routines

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

At the start of the class I will show the Ss a picture related to their last listening task and ask them different question about it to make them remember some things about it.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will give them a HO of three different questions and short answers(HO1) about the previous listening part. Ss will listen to the audio file R3.5 once and match the questions with their short answers individually. There is a WC FB At the end.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will elicit and write 'I go shopping at the weekends.' on the WB by the use of a picture. then I will ask them some CCQs. + Is it talking about this weekend or all weekends? – all weekends + Is it (Shopping) happening right now? or it is my routine. - It is my routine. After questions I will put a negative mark on the board and elicit the negative form of the sentence above.

Clarification (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Now, I will elicit the TL by eliciting different forms (for you/we/they) of the negative sentence above. Afterwards, I will highlight the form(Subject + don't + bare infinitive + ...). Next, I will drill the sentences paying attention to the intonation of the whole sentence.

Controlled Practice (2-3 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I give them HO2 and instruct them to put the sentences into the chart and complete it. After a short time they check their answers in pairs with a partner. whilst, I write the answers on the WB for them and ask them to check theirs.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I give them HO3 and give instructions by a demo with two first sentences about myself. Then, Ss do it individually. Then I introduce the bubble at the back of their papers and pair them up and tell them to ask and answer question in pairs using speech bubbles. At the end we do open pair feedback with some volunteers.

Highlight and clarification (10-12 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language and clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I write a sentence on the board(I work at the weekends.) and tell Ss that it is about 'me' and get them to ask a question about 'me' related to this sentence. After eliciting the question form(Do you work at the weekends?), I try to elicit yes/no answers with gesture. Then I get Ss to give me the sentences for you(plural) and they with yes/no answers. Afterwards, I elicit the form (Do + S + bare infinitive + ....? ). At the end we drill all the forms (Affirmative, Negative and question) with back chaining as all the Ss stand up.

Controlled practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I give them HO4 and they complete it individually after my instructions. After a while, they compare their answers with their partners and I give them the answer key (HO5) whilst.

Free Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will play 'a treasure island' game. They should stand up and search around the room to find five different questions of the TL which are hidden in different places around the class. First two people who find all five of them will be the winners of the game.
