Description

In this lesson, students are going to learn some adjectives and vocabulary in the beginning which will be helpful for them to be prepared for a reading lesson. Then there will be some exercises about "was/were/wasn't/weren't" which the students have learnt recently.

Main Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using texts about a festival, a celebration, a sports match in the context of past memories.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of adjectives
  • To provide review of past form of "to be"

Procedure

Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T. sticks picture on the WB and sticks some opposite adjectives(good- bad, hot-cold, big-small ,new-old, cheap-expensive, beautiful-ugly) mixed on the board. T. asks them to come to the board and stick the adjectives next to the related picture. T. checks the meaning and then drills if necessary.

Pre-Reading 1 (adjectives) (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible by providing them with new adjectives

T. gives the exercise 1 about adjectives and asks students to match them with the pictures. After they finish, t asks them to check their answers with their pairs and then t. checks the anwers with WCFB by eliciting the meaning and drills if there is a problem with the pronunciation about these adjective.

Pre-Reading 2 (Vocabulary) (3-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible by providing them with new vocabulary

Teacher writes some words on the WB (a stadium, a seat, New Year's Eve, fireworks, a party, a match) and elicits the meanings and then drills.

While-Reading #1 (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging scanning reading task.

T. gives the texts to the sts and asks them to scan and find the vocabulary that they have just learnt in the texts. After they finish, teacher asks them which texts involve these vocab.

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task.

T. gives students questions about the texts and asks them to read the texts again and answer the questions. After they finish t. asks them to check their answers with pairs and then checks the answers with WCFB.

Post-Reading 1 (3-5 minutes) • To help students to remember past form of "to be"

T. gives handouts to the sts and asks them to read the sentences. T. asks if the sentences are about past or present. And then t. gives another handout to the students and asks them to complete the gaps in the table with was, wasn't, were, weren't. After they finish, t. checks the answers with WCFB.

Post-Reading 2 (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with exercises and realise the TL of the texts.

T. gives handouts to the students and asks them to choose correct form of to be. After they finish, t. asks them to check their answers with their pairs and checks the answers with WCFB.

If Time Activity (3-5 minutes) • To provide sts with further understanding of the TL of the texts.

T. asks them to find out which person says each sentence in the exercise 5 in pairs. T. checks answers with WCFB.
