Elementary, A2, 12-13 years old level

Description

In this lesson, Ss practise affirmative, negative and question form in the simple past through guided discovery through a reading text about a pet's holiday. Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide reading practice using a text in the past simple about a pet's holiday in the context of people describing their holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a role-play in the context of holiday

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • to set lesson context and engage Ss through a low-stress/familiar class activity

1 T greets Ss and asks them how they are 2 T asks Ss to retell her story about her holiday using the words on the WB (Hawaii family plane in July good time) If they need I will prompt and/or write on the WB `was travelled had went`

Pre-Reading stage (10-12 minutes) • to prepare Ss for the text and make it accessible

1 T `look quickly at the pictures of the story, who can you see? T elicits "man, woman, dog, newsagent". 2 T ` Give me a word about each picture` T elicits holiday, dog`s home 2 T` Talk to your partner about the story, what is the story about?` (PW) 3 T asks one pair to tell their story 4 T asks other pairs if they have the same story; if not, what is different?

While-reading stage (11-13 minutes) • to provide Ss with less challenging gist and specific information reading task

1 T `match the questions/sentences to the right pictures.Picture 8 has no question. Check with your partner. T puts answer key on the WB (1-c, 2-a, 3-d, 4-b, 5-f,6-g,7-e, 8-i, 9 h). T` let`s stick the Qs next to the pictures. 2 (T displays the answers speech bubbles on the WB) T `Read the qs again and let`s complete the sentences (Answer key on the WB: 1 were; 2 went; 3 did; 4 didn't; 5 didn't; 6 want; 7 did: enjoyed 8 come: 9 don't) 3 T `read the story (S); T `read these sentences, find the mistake in each sentence and writes the correct word`. Ss check their answers in pairs, T writes answer key on the WB (1 France 2 caravan 3 good 4 didn't go 5 didn't want 6 had 7 didn`t want)

Post-reading stage (8-10 minutes) • to provide an opportunity to practise the TL
